Inglise keel, English history

1.2000 years ago, Romans were the most powerful people in the world.Different people, living under Romans spoke various languages and had different cultures, but were bound together by common law.
2.Romans spoke Latin.French,Spanish and Italian developed from the Latin language.
3.Their political system later influenced the building of governments in USA and other countries.
4.Romans first arrived in Britain under the emperor Julius Caesar, but he was forced to withdraw his soldiers from Britain because of rebellion in Gaul (France).
5.Second Roman invasion happened 90 years later, 43 AD, under the Emperor Claudius.
6.Celts were easily defeated , because Romans were living in an advanced civilization and had better arms, armour, organization and training.
After the invasion, Britain was ruled as a province.Celts were free, but they had to pay heavy taxes to their conquerors and work for them.
7.As the Romans lived in an higher level of civilization, they also knew more about architecture.They taught the Britons how to build bridges,houses and paved roads.Public baths and tiled floors were also common.
8.As the Britons lived under the Romans influence , it was natural, that their language was also influenced.Therefore, number of English words can be traced back to their origin from the Latin, such as street-stratus; wall-vallum; port-portus.
9.Hadrian's Wall was a wall, that Romans built to keep the Picts away, who lived in nowdays Scotland.
10.Romans stayed in Britain for 350 years.Their era ended in the beginning of the 5th century.They had to live to protect their homeland from the barbarian tribes.

11.Britain was invaded by Germanic tribes Angles, Saxons and the Jutes.
12.According to the legend, King Arthur fought against the Germanic tribes.
13.The word ''England'' comes from Angle-land (Anglo-Saxon England).
14.Anglo-Saxons were advanced, brave, artistic,hardy and poetic.They liked to hold meetings, where people could express themselves.
15.Old English is Anglo-Saxon language, which developed into Old English and was with a strong Germanic influence.

16.Vikings came from Denmark.They were fierce pagan (a person holding other beliefs than the main world beliefs) seafaring warriors.
17.The Viking invasion begun in 787.At the beginning, they raided coastal towns, moving inward.They raided churches and monasteries and took religious objects made from silver and gold.During the 800's, they conquered all the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms except Wessex.
18.The Danelaw was a treaty signed by Alfred the Great and Danish king of East Anglia.The east side of England was Danish territory (Danelaw) , so the English and the Danes were equal in taht part of the country.

19.The Anglo-Saxon rule ended in 1066 and their last king was Edward the Confessor.
20.In 1066, Ed the Confs. died with no heirs and the crown went to his brother-in-law, Harold Godwin.
The battle of Hastings was held between Norman Duke William and King Harold.N.D.William won and was crowned as the king of England.
21.Norman feudals lived in luxurious castles, while the English, as the servile class, were very poor and hardly ever ate meat.
22.Latin - was spoken by religious people and university scholars.
Norman-French - was the official language of the king and the aristrocracy
Anglo-Saxon German - was spoken by common people.
23.Middle English is a language formed by Norman-French and Anglo-Saxon German.
